How to Clear Change Oil Message on Craftsman Lawn Tractor

  1. Start the engine and wait a few minutes. According to Craftsman, the oil light will come on when you start the mower, but should go off after a short time. If it doesn't, turn the ignition key to the "Off" position to stop the engine.
  2. Raise the hood on your lawn tractor and locate the oil dipstick. Remove the dipstick, wipe it off with a rag, and then insert the dipstick back into its resting place. Remove it once again and inspect the dipstick. The oil pressure light may go on if the oil is low, so the amount of oil left on the dipstick should ideally be somewhere below the "Full" mark, but above the "Add" mark. If it is close to the "Add" mark, add more oil, in the amount indicated in your tractor's owner's manual.
  3. Turn the key to the "Run" position, keeping the tractor's engine off. Hold down the "D" and the "C" buttons at the same time for 5 seconds. When you release the buttons, any maintenance reminders on the dash should be reset.

According to Craftsman, the maintenance lights will stay on for the first five hours of operation, and then should turn back on after 50 hours of use. If you're still in the first five hours, operate the tractor for at least five hours before attempting to make any changes.
