Engine

The John Deere JS26 is powered by a 190-cc Briggs & Stratton 700 Series Quantum engine that produces 7-foot-pounds of torque. It's equipped having a one-quart fuel tank along with a standard prime-and-pull recoil starting system. By comparison, the JS 26's sibling, the JS46, is equipped having a Briggs & Stratton 875 Series engine that puts out 8.75 foot-pounds of torque; the JS46 is also equipped with an electric start system. Mower Deck

The John Deere JS26 features a stamped-steel deck having a mulching blade that cuts a 22-inch-wide swath. The deck can be configured for mulching, side discharge or bagging via a rear-mounted collection bag; the bag holds 2.5 bushels of grass clippings. Cutting height is adjustable between 1.2 and 4.2 inches, in nine increments, via a single adjustment lever on the mower's rear wheels plus a separate lever on each in the front wheels.

Propulsion

The John Deere JS26 is equipped with John Deere's variable-speed MowMentum propulsion system. The system powers the front wheels via a drive belt between the engine and the wheels. The speed on the mower is infinitely adjustable using a lever on the mower's handle. A neutral lock switch prevents the engagement on the drive system during starting and transportation; the neutral lock also allows the mower to function in a nonpowered push mode if necessary.

Newer Model

The JS26 had been replaced in the John Deere line with the JM36, a comparably powered and sized mower with similar features. The 22-inch JM36 is powered by a 190-cc engine and incorporates the MowMentum drive system. Like the JS26, the JM36 is equipped using a steel deck, rather than the aluminum decks used on more expensive models. Also as with the JS26, the JM36 features recoil starting instead in the electric start system in its big brother, the JM46.
